at Rita’s home 10 Rostherne Ave Croydon. 

This is a chance to meet and talk to friends and colleagues in an informal and friendly atmosphere.

Teaching the Meter Matters 

Andrea will share recent research on the meter, discuss how this impacts the pedagogy of meter and demonstrate her broad and flexible three-step process through which to teach the meter. Don’t miss out! 

Andrea Calilhanna is a PhD candidate at Western Sydney University’s MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development (Brain Sciences). Andrea has been on the Council of the MTA NSW for over 10 years and has taught music in both the studio and classroom for more than 30 years. In 2018, she was awarded a Master of Music (Musicology) at The University of Sydney, Sydney Conservatorium of Music (SCM) for her research on the pedagogy of musical meter with school-age students ‘Teaching Music Meter to School-Age Students Through the Ski-Hill Graph’. During her studies at SCM she founded and co-ordinated the SCM’s Meter Symposiums 2016-2018, presented a number of conference papers and published research. Her recent research has led to a number of publications on the study of meter and traditional music of Nigeria (Igbo Tribe) where she and her Nigerian colleagues introduced mathematical music theory into Africa. In a relaxed, discussion-based workshop.

Shirley Paton Scholarship 2021

Shirley Paton was an extraordinary pianist who achieved recognition early in her career and eventually became a performer for the ABC. As a young student, she won the 1937 Empire Scholarship that enabled her to study for three years at Trinity College London. The Shirley Paton Memorial Scholarship has been created in her memory.

The purpose of the scholarship is to further the career of a promising pianist and provide the means for a series of lessons that will enhance and advance the winner’s chances of pursuing a concert career. The suggested minimum level for entry be Licentiate or equivalent.

Online Examinations: what teachers need to know. 

The AMEB now has online examinations in all grades of Theory and Musicianship as well as grades Preliminary to 4 of Music Craft  

In this session, Rita will show examples of the type of questions candidates can expect  with a focus on what the examiners are looking for and how the questions are marked.  

Latest AMEB theory publications will be available to view, along with other recommended resources.
